SOPREMA was established in 1908 by Charles Geisen while seeking to develop a fully waterproof fabric that would also be flexible and easy to install. He found the solution by soaking jute fabric in hot bitumen. The result was a lightweight but strong membrane that came to be known as “MAMMOUTH.®”

Today, the company operates over 100 manufacturing plants in 100 countries. In the United States, SOPREMA manufactures in Wadsworth, Ohio; and Gulfport, Miss.; and continues to operate with core values of integrity, respect, commitment to excellence, and a focus on sustainable product development to minimize the impact on the environment.

Recently, SOPREMA provided a wide range of materials for the new construction at York Elementary School in Raleigh, NC, part of the Wake County Public School System. Though not in the original specification for below-grade waterproofing solutions, waterproofing contractor J.T. Murphy Construction helped persuade the design team to choose SOPREMA to benefit from the single-source warranty and compatible tie-in details for the entire building enclosure, including wall and roofing products as well.

Thanks to the invaluable benefit of SOPREMA’s extensive product line, the team was able to circumvent multiple raw material shortages. When base sheet fasteners were not available to start the roof application, they switched to COLPLY® EF adhesive.
